Broken bathroom faucet handle

The handle fell off the faucet. It appears the previous people in the house must have had the same experience and looks like a stringy putty was used to reattach it. Should I do the same or is there another way to repair it? I don’t want to purchase a new faucet, we’re renting. Advice is greatly appreciated!!
