Hello,

I am installing a Moentrol shower valve in my shower and I'm doing the framing (new construction) and my plumber is doing the DWV/supply. I need to put in the 2x6 blocking to mount the valve and I'm not sure how deep to mount it. (2x4 wall) I presume that I need to identify the model of the handle and then know the wall assembly (tile and backer board thickness) so that the plaster ground ends up flush. Sadly, I keep reading about folks who are displeased with Moen's installation guides so I just wanna hear how a pro would approach this...

-Do I select my faucet, then the associated Moentrol valve model, then have them all in hand and see how the wall assembly and plaster ground will land?

Are there any Moen shower models that folks are particularly pleased with on the Moentrol side? (aesthetics aside of course)

Thanks.

With a 2x4 wall I place the backing even with the back of the studs.
The people complaining about the handle are funny. You can't please some people. As plumbers, we like that there is some leeway to work with, as you can't count on the tile installation being where you expected it.

Here is a Delta valve. How far does this stick out?

Thanks Terry. I was also able to find some of the previous "spirited" discussions about this topic. I will try and do a mockup of my finished wall (which will be tiled be yours truly). Can I assemble the valve, plaster ground, trim and handle so I can measure things and then disassemble the assembly? I will give that a try (along with my wall assembly).
