I have this Old Shower Kohler handle and trim plate that I would like to replace. It operates just fine, just want to replace the trim and handle for aesthetic purposes.
I have already seen a video of how to remove old one, seems very simple. But that vidoe only showed them repairing it, not putting on a new one and how you would do that.
How do I know which ones will go on easily without having to change things on the inside to fit right? Are there retrofit kits? And if so how to know which ones will work with my old one. I assume I have to get another Kohler Brand to make changing it out less complitcated. I just don't want to have to change a bunch of parts inside the wall to make it fit right. Any links to products would be greatly appreciated. I would like to stay under 150 for cost if possible. I understand if I can't. Here is a pic of my old one and where the mount screws go. Square faceplate is about 6 inches.

It all depends on what rough in valve and cartridge you have. Take the trim off and get a picture of the valve and cartridge.

Thank you for the advice. I did take a pic. Went on Kohler and went through their quiz to identify and it turns out it is an old Kohler K304 Rite Temp. (discontinued) Kohler chat said the only way I can get new trim plate and handle is to either update my valve with a retrofit kit mixer cap 1307346 OR Just install a whole newer updated Valve that is part number 8304-K-NA. I would have to look at install videos for both. But I feel like I'm going to spend 66 on a retro kit maybe just replace the whole valve with an updated valve. That may require a plumber.

I've used the retrofit cap on an old Coralais valve before and it worked well. I would go that route. It should open up several more current trim options.

Yes, I have decided to do that, but first I am trying to find an install video to see if I can handle it myself and so far cant find one. I have plumbed a sink before but basically only done plumbing on the outside of the wall. Is this retrofit kit basically just replacing the front half of the old valve so the face of it accepts a new trim kit?
