I was changing the tub drain when it snapped, after opening the wall, I tried to remove the brass fittings to change out the drain portion. The threaded brass tailpiece snapped off during the process (old corroded fittings). The tailpipe goes into a black plastic pipe with a nut on it. I removed the nut, but the brass pipe won't budge as I try to remove it. The brass pipe begins to compress if I use a pipe wrench, so that doesn't work. Oh yeah, very confined space to reach into to access it, so I cannot simply remove the trap and pull out the unit to work on it.

Any ideas?

The photo is with the phone stuck inside, I can only see what's on the top right of the pipe

The slip joint washer spins off.
Most of the time, I'm replacing with a glued up waste and overflow, so I'm removing the p-trap and starting over from scratch.

That is pretty simple to deal with...

I am assuming you claim that the brass tailpiece is stuck solid in the abs pipe??
and you have taken off the slip nut and it still wont budge out of the fitting??

the best thing to do is cut off the brass tailpiece as best possible and at the threads of
the adaptor .... then go get a 1 1/2 x 1 1/4 fernco reducer and clamp it on the threads
and continue with the job...

Not all codes are lax to allow the use of a Fernco (un shielded ) coupling

A Mission coupling offers a lot more integrity with peace of mind

I dont think I have seen a 100% banded reducer couplings you are talking about..
but these are approved in most areas

Of course It really depends on where you are in the USA..... these little jewels have been
around long enough that they give me all the peace of mind I need to get me out of a
nasty jam.....

By code we use these with the metal wrap if we're using couplings.
The all rubber can and do shift. When I find them, I toss em.

I agree 100% Those will work just fine and even better .... Terry.
I forgot we have a few of them with the reducer sleeve from 1 1/4 down to
1 1/4... we just rarely use them

Odds are you will find them at the hardware store right next to
the little grey rubber ones.... ( I really dont know which ones the DIYer will buy)

the codes--are pretty lax here in Indiana...
I use the little grey ones quite a bit underneath
kitchen sinks when necessary...never have had a problem

but the banded ones are better
