Little Giant shallow well pump motor overheating it was installed in November 2018 and never really ran properly having to be turn on and off to get it to start to work again. house was drained down for the season then when water was turned back on in May ran for a day and then stopped working again. Was able to shut down and get it to come on again for about another day then it stopped and now motor is overheating. prior to this plumber had installed a grundfos which ran for 5 months before stopping working. prior to that pump had lasted at least 15 years.

Got a question there?

How do you know the motor is overheating? (smoke, IR thermometer, etc?) What pump model did you install?
How are you powering the pump (voltage)? How much current is the pump drawing?

Was the pump pumping well?

All UL listed motor have a built in thermo switch that will switch out when the motor overheats. It must cool down and close the circuit before it will run. It seems like a bad motor from the start. When it takes a few on offs to get it going (a cold motor), does the motor hum at all? A small stone or something else could be jammed in the propeller area of the pump.
