I went to a home the other day where the drain from the wall was too low for the tail piece on the lav drain.
They had tightened the upper nut too tight and split it. The normal solution is to either replace the chromed brass tail piece with a longer one cut to fit, or use a PVC extension.

I had to use an extension on a tub overflow the other day. Luckily the drain linkage was adjustable enough to still work. I was replacing a drum trap that had Draino in it and it poured all over me. Luckily I had safety glasses on. Can I say how much I hate drum traps!
