Just replace an old glued abs trap in a lav.. Installed a 1 1/4 trap adapter and proceeded with the tubular.. Really does not fit as tight as I like. I looked at some old work that I did years ago with a 1 1/2 trap adapter to 1 1/2 tubular (in a kitchen) and it seems to be pretty tight.

Of course after the fact I did more looking around and found a tubular 1 1/4 trap that adapts to a 1 1/2 tubular tail piece. I am not an expert at physics but am guessing that this would be a better option as the diameter of the tubular entering the trap adapter is going to affect the purchase and forces applied by the nut to the trap arm and make a tighter fit...

I always try and leave enough room to cut out and replace my goofs when I glue but would rather not.

Is the newer tubular thinner than the stuff of a few years ago making thee connections harder to get right?

Is abs tubular better than the nylon stuff? Picked some up from supply house .. yes its tubular and marketed as abs.. The product is much stiffer and flexes less than the white stuff (nylon??) from the big box store..

Thoughts and experience? Thanks in advance..

Usually plastic p-traps are polypropylene, whether black or white. If they are bundled with a trap adapter, that might say PVC or ABS, even tho the p-trap itself is polypropylene. Yet yours might indeed be non-polypropylene plastic. I am not familiar with those.

Slip joint drain stuff is measured by OD, so a 1-1/4 trap should measure 1.250. So I would start there in identifying the problem.

What trap adapter did you use?

Does that trap adapter have a separate washer, or is that function integrated with the nut?

I suspect you could just replace the nut and keep the glued part. https://www.homedepot.com/s/trap nut?NCNI-5
