We need to install a corner shower and found a unit I like (I've only seen a picture so far). I questioned the drain because it looked small and the seller responded and said it's 1.5". We're installing a 2" drain pipe (I believe required by code), but I'm concerned with the 1.5" opening in the base. I understand we could reduce the pipe to accommodate the 1.5" (as if it was a tub). But I'm wondering if the 1.5" drain is allowed in a shower base itself.

It has multiple body-jets, in addition to the showerhead, so it seems there would be even more water than a regular shower, possibly worsening the drain issue.

And finally, it's a 36" corner unit with a curved front and two small doors that meet in the middle of the curve. The jets are directly opposite the door opening and therefore, shoot water directly at the door. I'm concerned it might be inclined to leak. If anyone has any experience with this setup, I'd welcome your input.

Thanks for your time.

Has the assembly got any approvals listed in its documentation? IF so, then, you should be able to install it. With few exceptions, you can always go from a smaller drain pipe into a larger one, but should not go the other way. One exception is a toilet where you can use a 3x4 fitting.

FWIW, things get offered that do not meet the required current codes. IMHO, that shouldn't happen, but it does.

I haven't see a 1.5" drain for a shower since 1960. Is it from Canada? They use less water there.
Just kidding, they use more but allow the small shower drain. That wouldn't fly South.

If you ever needed to replace any part of the 1.5" drain, it may be nearly impossible to find one especially the drain cover. Recently there have been a few posts about shower spas. Both post mentioned 1.5" drains that come with its assembly kits.
