I have a Rinnai Tankless water heater. It is a Continuum, model V2020W / V1616W. Is there a way to remove the cold water inlet plug if the plug is brittle and cracking?

Took me most of the afternoon day, I finally was able remove the plug. The problem now is that the filter separated from the plug and is now stuck inside the inlet. My guess is that there is a substantial amount of sediment holding it in ... anyone have any suggestions for loosening the filter and removing it? I have a new plug and filter, so if I destroy the old filter, it is ok.
