Reducing the outflow on a submersible pump... does it hurt the pump?

I'm trying to pump out a hot tub by using a subm pump from my pond (it feeds a waterfall so it has a high volume of discharge). My question is if I can hook a hose to the discharge and use it to water the garden, if it will hurt the pump if it's not discharging at it's usual rate?

You can also just create a siphon with the hose and skip the pump.

Though I have used a hose on a pump before and it was fine.
