Push down drain clicks to close but will not click open

I have installed a push down bathroom sink drain but although it clicks closed when pushed down, I can not get it to click up when I want the drain to open. I checked the drain click mechanism out of the box and it worked well to open and close prior to the installation but after the install on the basin will not click open.

Any suggestion as to what me causing this frustrating problem?
