I know I've had this problem before, and I can't remember how I solved it.

I recently repaired a crack in the tank of an old Standard toilet. I think it's 1951. The old spud and gasket were unsalvagable. Tank is stamped 195 40547.

When trying to install a new flush valve, the gasket is way too thick. The tank sits up on the gasket when I put it on the bowl, and the 3" bolts don't even make it through the tank and out through the holes on the bowl. I know I can get longer bolts, but from experience I know I would have to absolutely reef on them to get the tank to a place that it doesn't wobble because it still sits too high on the gasket.

What am I missing here?

You will need to use an American Standard tank to bowl gasket. They are hollowed out to fit around the big hex nut for the flush valve.

Those old Standard toilets had 4 inch brass/bronze bolts between the tank and the bowl because the porcelain on the bowl is thicker.
