Maybe this will save someone the time and anxiety we went through: We needed a new tank for our old ST743s bowl and we were very lucky to find a brand new one locally for a very reasonable cost. Here's what you need to know before you attempt this:
1.) the bolts for tank to bowl need to be 3/8 inch by at least 3 inches (preferably 3.25 inches) because the old bowl needed 3/8 inch bolts and you need that length for attachment. The 776 tank came with 5/16 inch shorter stainless bolts. We prefer brass so that is what we used and they were 3.25 inches long.
2.) make sure the rubber gasket (flush valve) that comes with the new tank remains solidly intact on the tank bottom when you lower that tank to bowl else, as we did, you will see water leaking onto the bowl top center area cause the gasket slipped a tiny bit when lowering tank to bowl.
I hope this helps even one person save the time this took to figure out. Otherwise a very simple install if you know these two tidbits first.
