We are still on 2008 with no updates in site. Actually 2009 IRC. Good in that no AFCIs for kitchens but bad that newer tech like PV is not as clear.

GFCI, now AFCI and tamper resistant outlets all come about because of people were getting hurt. AFCI because apparently a lot of homes caught fire due to burning wires or appliances. A few years ago I came across an article and it was amazing how many kids got hurt sticking stuff in outlets. GFCI had to be one of the greatest safety devices and no one now has problems installing them.
