hi all,

Have found a ton of help on here....first time posting.

In our kitchen island we have a sink with a disposal. This is the 2nd sink in the kitchen and is rarely used- the main sink is against the wall and is attached to the dishwasher.

The issue we are having with the island sink is two-fold. First, when we run a lot of water in the main sink we hear gurgling in the island sink. Not a big deal. The 2nd problem is that we are getting a horrible sewage smell on a pretty much daily basis from the island sink. If we run water in the sink for a minute or so the smell goes away for a day.

Here's what the stack looks like under the island sink. Should that top pipe have an aav or something else? Any help or clues as to what is going on?

Thanks!!

Your photo holds no clues. You should check to see if the trap seal has been siphoned when you get the smells. An AAV would
likely help in that instance. If, instead, sewer gas is somehow being forced to bubble thru the trap and out thru the disp., it would
indicate some unknown (and unknowable without further info) problem further into the drain system, and an AAV would be useless. Island
sinks have been installed by the tens or hundreds of thousands without AAV's and without problems.

The caped off pipe might have been intended to be an Air Admittance valve. If that was done it would cause the problem that you described.
