We just moved into a rental home and there's been a bad smell coming from the kitchen sink. Not quite sewage but sort fo a stale trash smell. The owner replaced the Air admittance valve and garbage disposal but the smells persists. I now think the smell is coming from behind the dishwasher since it seems to be concentrated at its top corner. I was searching around this site and saw several others with a similar problem. We have an air gap that seems to be working well. But i'm not sure about the drain hose from the dishwasher. Do i still need a high loop if i have an air gap? Does the plumbing setup here look appropriate? The dishwasher is to the right of the cabinet (as looking at the pic) with a white hose entering at the bottom and going to the top left where the air gap sits. I'm going to have a dishwasher expert come out in a bit, but if there's a simple fix then i'd love to do it. thanks.

The 7/8" drain hose coming from a DW air gap must not have any low points and must not be kinked.
The solution is we usually use multiple long sweep 3/4" copper 90s and or 45s to solve that.

Smell is not from inside the dishwasher? You probably checked, but I thought I would ask.

Thanks for the replies so far.
I don't sense the smell when i open the dishwasher. Its strongest at the top edge of the dishwasher. I 've cleaned the gaskets and door already and run cycles with Afresh tablets as well as a baking soda/vinegar combo.

Re the lines, there's a kink in the black rubber tubing between the air gap and disposal. Plumber said it wasn't a problem. Are you saying that should be corrected? And then i should, in addition, elevate the drain hose coming from DW to the air gap? Just want to make sure i'm understanding correctly. Thanks.

I wonder if the smell develops in the back from a leak, perhaps at the drain line exit of the DW, rise up, and come under the counter.
