I have a toilet which has worked fine for years.
Started having to hold the handle down extra long because the flapper is going back down (closing) too soon after pickup.
Tried lengthening the chain, shortening the chain and even replaced the flapper but it still closes back too quickly.

Any suggestions?
Tie some kind of flotation on it (flapper) to keep it up longer?

thanks in advance!

The last Cadet 3 one-piece that I installed had a float between the flapper and the trip lever attached to the chain.
It looked like it needed it too.

Sorry I haven't replied in so long.
Have had pressing issues.

Terry, hj, thanks so much for replying.
Some more info:
It is a 2-piece American Standard toilet supposedly installed within the last 10 years.
It has a shallow water tank and therefore a very short overflow tube.
I will upload pics below.

The red flapper is the one I put in purchased at Home Depot.
Korky I think, standard universal 3''.
The purple in the picture is a rubber letter I tried to attach to hold the flapper up longer.
Another issue is that the new flapper where the arms connect to the overflow tube seem to be slightly narrower than the old one so that there is too much play, causing the flapper not to seat right when it closes so that sometimes the water keeps leaking out the overflow tube unless you move the flapper to the side slightly.

thanks in advance.

I bought a basic korky 3" universal flapper at Home Depot that is not adjustable before even posting in this forum.

The only 3 inch Korky universal flapper on the HD site is adjustable. The adjustment is not visible from the top.

Maybe it was a fluidmaster.
I'll go check it tomorrow.
But I'm 95% sure it didn't have an adjustment on the bottom.

thanks.

They make an adjustable flapper that allows the arms to move to a better position.

Both yours and the adjustable arm one can be adjusted for water usage.

Well it turns out that the flapper DID have an adjustment on it.
It was turned all the way down so I turned it all the way up and it seems to be working much better now.
The fluidmaster linked above was the one I bought though.
I just thought it was a korky.

Thanks so much Reach4 (and everyone else)!
