Faucet install - gasket on drain piece instead of putty/silicone?

I'm installing a new Delta faucet in our bathroom. To my surprise, the faucet comes with a gasket for the drain flange assembly to seal between the drain (as it slides down into the sink hole) and the top surface of the sink hole. Additionally, the instructions say to use the gasket - no mention of either plumber's putty or silicone.

Is this normal? The faucet is the Delta Vero widespread faucet, for reference. Am I asking for problems by following their instructions and just using the gasket instead of plumber's putty or silicone?

Thanks for any help, I'm pretty new to this.

Hmm...the drain is metal, fairly heavy and sturdy. The faucet is a decent-quality Delta one.

Would you just use putty instead of the gasket in this case?

It hardly matters there.
I've used both. The part I worry about are the threads where the drain passes through the bowl overflow area. There is a large rubber washer with a flat washer and nut below that. Sometimes water will follow the threads downward there. I either smear some putty on those threads or use pipe dope.

Got it, thanks - I'll use the rubber gasket then and put a little putty on the threads. Thanks for the help.
