Does this 50 yr pipe need to be replaced?

It's the drain for a bathroom sink. It hasn't leaked. It's got lots of rusted bits in it. When I tap on it, it feel solid. How do I tell if it's okay?

At some point it will be replaced. In your case, it matters whether it keeps draining. It's not a pressure pipe, so you should be okay for that.
Kitchen lines are the ones that fail first. That is mainly for what goes down them that corrodes the pipes from the inside.

Think of the expense of tearing open that new wall to replace the plugged-up or leaking drain, which could happen
tomorrow or twenty years from now. That doesn't even look like a proper drain fitting to me. I'm the sort that thinks
all steel supply and drain pipes should've been replaced long, long ago.
