Sound like a stupid question but I have a leak from my shower drain that is getting into my AC ductwork one room over (yes duct work is in the floor) and I got one quote for a starting price to tear out tub and tear out slab as needed to replace what is assumed to be a rusted pipe.

A leak detection specialist is on the way out to try to pinpoint where leak is but receptionist on phone said something about possibly being a leak in the “shower pan”. This is just a standard fiberglass tub mounted on the foundation with a shower head mounted on the wall like you have when you use a shower curtain. I didn’t think a tub would have any need of a shower pan. House was built in 1980 if that helps regarding original construction methods for the time.

A home built in 1980 would have ABS or PVC for drains and copper for water supply.
What rust are they talking about?

A fiberglass tub has no pan underneath.

Possible leaks could be at the shower arm
Around the plate for the faucet
The tub spout, sometimes the O-Ring fails on the spout and water is pushed back toward the wall.
The overflow seal.

But they're ready to pull the tub just like that?

Thanks Terry,

I wont be using that company again. Leak detection specialists cut into the dry wall in closet and we immediately saw a severed metal run off pipe above the PVC and the slab. Plus he was sure the pipe in the slab was PVC before cutting into the dry wall.
