while we were out of town, we had a floord in our kitchen, and aren't sure what caused it. There is a tear in the water line but the valve in the wall was also broken. My question is about the tear in the water line. There are two parallel tears, about an inch long that are clean and look as if someone just sliced the hose with an exacto knife. How common is it for something like this to happen on its own? Everything I was able to found about leaky hoses talks either about a pin size hole or a blown hose. The holes in our hose don't macth either scenario. Also, how common/likely is it for these to be two parallel tears? Any other insight would be greatly appreciated.

You don't say what kind of hose/water-line your house has. Polybutylene, copper, or PEX? What this line installed when the house was built or did someone run this line later? How old is the house and is the under floor area susceptible to freezing?

I'll bet you won't be able to duplicate the cut with an exacto knife. But since you will be replacing that line, you will have the tubing to try it.

What is your water pressure situation? Do you ever get dribbles from the relief valve of your water heater?

It's probably a clean break because the line was scored by something, which created a weak point and a clean break when it broke.
