So I just started living in a new rental home. It's a split level and my upstairs bathroom is above my downstairs. Every time I flush the upper toilet the bottom toilet water explodes! What's going on? I plan on calling my landlord, but I'm just curious what it could be. Is this a case where the plumbing isn't properly ventilated? The home was built in 1958.

Sounds like it wasn't plumbing correctly. Not much you can do about it now unless you have access to the pipes on the lower floor.

Since this is a rental, the landlord is responsible of having this fixed. Responsible = legally required.

Is this a case where the plumbing isn't properly ventilated?

Most likely not, as your description is sort of the opposite of the problem that occurrs without proper ventilation (e.g. siphoning the bowl, not exploding into it).

Hard to tell from the description, but a blocked or partially-blocked main line comes to mind.

Do you get nasty stuff from the upstairs toilet coming OUT the downstairs toilet?
