no label = very accessible location - they just changed out this check valve thinking it was the issue - banging even more now

Plumber changed check valve at tank in crawl space

I had pictured a much less comfortable place.

Looks like there is a union which makes life much easier. Break the union loose with two pipe wrenches, unscrew the check valve from the tank T, remove the dart and spring in the check valve, then reassemble in the reverse order.

Yep, if you're handy and have a few pipe wrenches and some basic tools.
