I'm in the process of changing out my tub drain and not sure how the tee is attached to the galvanized or copper part in the ground. It doesn't look like there's anything that's attaching it to the tee. Like a slip nut or threads on the pipe. Also what would be the best way to attach the new tee to the pipe.

Likely that lead pipe is leading to a drum trap.. which is either lead or cast iron. I would continue digging til you find the trap and see what shape that is in.

The house was built in 1971. Would it still have lead pipes?
It shouldn't... but here we are.

A friend of mine was building a hair salon for his sister back in Pennsylvania and the plumbers he had hired had never heard of ABS or PVC systems.. they only had cast iron.

We don't connect to any lead pipes. If we find them we remove them in their entirety. But the ones we're seeing are at 100yrs old at this point and have lived well beyond their service life.

I guess it could be lead but I've never seen threads on lead. I agree with @John Gayewski looks like a brass trap, possibly slip joint. Definitely needs to excavate more of the trap.

The connection is soldered, but I don't see any lead. Pretty sure that's a brass trap that has been buried.
I don't quite see the arc of a trap.. but it could be. A simple scraping of the metal will reveal the truth. Lead will be soft and very bright silver in color while if its brass it will be harder but bright yellow in color.

I would be happy to be wrong in this case.. and lead in 1971 would be way outta left field.
