Plumbers did their rough ins, left this cardboard box around the shower drain. I’m assuming this is a concrete block out, but what purpose does it serve? Should I build something a little sturdier?

This will be your access to the trap and the riser, if you have to ever have to service them.
After pouring concrete all around it, you can fill it with gravel.

Just poured. Yanked the box out of there. Cut a plastic fountain cup to slide over instead. I’ve never installed a shower drain before so hoping this will give me enough clearance to fit up.
