Hi,

I've got a 2" XH cast iron hub I'm trying to connect a sink to in our basement. I've bought different 2" x 1 1/2" & 2" x 2" compression donuts and none fit tight in the hub. I called Fernco and gave them my ID measurements and that donut was also too loose. I called them back and they told me that the next size up is significantly bigger and won't fit my hub. Does anyone have a suggestion on what to do? Am I missing something? Will placing the ABS pipe inside the donut make it stretch out enough to fit snug in the hub? (That seems unlikely)

Fernco's tried: 22UX-139 & 22UX-117 (There's also others from Home Depot but same issue)

Photos attached below. Also, I can take better photos if needed. These were taken when I was done with the day and hated everything lol

Thanks,

Josh

Will placing the ABS pipe inside the donut make it stretch out enough to fit snug in the hub?
Quite possibly. The donut needs to be compressed in its final configuration, so that it will seal. That could be done either by having the loose donut a bit oversized for the hub, with the pipe possibly passing through it freely; or a bit undersized for the pipe, with the donut possibly fitting freely inside the hub; or a combination of the two.

So I suggest it is worth trying, and if you do, please report back to us.

Cheers, Wayne

Thanks for replying, Wayne. I'll go see what happens with the pipe inserted into the donut and report back shortly.

Ok, so I tried sticking the 1.5" ABS into the donut first and it did make it fit better. Unfortunately, not tight enough. It was relatively easy to get it into the hub and did not hold water. That was with the 22UX - 139.

I went to try it with the 22UX - 117 and discovered a few interesting things. The 117 fits the hub a little better than the 139 prior to inserting ABS pipe into it making me think that with a pipe inserted it may create a water tight seal. The weird part is that the pipe insert for the 117 is smaller than the 139. I tried to get a 1.5" pipe to fit but couldn't and ultimately tested a piece of 1.25" pipe and that fit. I looked at the number on the donut and discovered that it just says 22UX w/ no number. I contacts Supply House where I purchased the donuts to see if they could confirm that maybe I was sent the wrong donut. They're going to reach out to Fernco but told me they don't carry 2" x 1.25" donuts.

Sorry this is long winded but I'm not sure what I should do. Any thoughts? I've attached images of 139 and "117" for comparison. Both in the hub (you can see how "117" fits better"), next to each other with the size difference and an image of "117" with no marking indicating it's 117.

Why not use 1.5 inch? You can put in a 1.5 inch pipe to a 1.5 inch trap adapter. Then use a reducing washer to connect your 1.25 P-trap.

I'm using 1.5" pipe. There is no 1.25" P-trap. My problem is with connecting a 1.5" pipe to a 2" XH CI hub. Are you responding on the correct post? Or am I missing something?

You brought up 1.25 pipe, so I was not sure you were not considering that.

How about using a 2 inch pipe? I have never used a Donut. As far as I can tell, all of the 2 inch trap adapters connect to 2 inch pipe/fittings, but 1.5 inch slip joint. Maybe you would have the same problems with those.

Ya, unfortunately the 2" x 2" donuts I got are also loose. I think what I'm going to do is take a hole saw and open the inner hole a little wider on the 2 x 1 1/2". I'll let you know how it goes.

So, I ended up cutting out some of the inside of the donut with a hole saw . It widened it just enough to fit my 1.5” pipe tightly w/ lubrication and it also managed to expand the donut enough to plug the 2” hub. Watertight!
