old main water shut off

I have 2 main water ball valve shut offs. Don't know why there are 2 but my question is...Can I safely turn off the valves without breaking them? I'm just turning them slightly perpendicular bur I'm afraid that their age (my house is from 1960) might crack them off.

Any thoughts? Thanka.
