I'm replacing our water heater and will be adding a sediment filter and expansion tank to the main line between where it enters the house and the new water heater. Many of the filters I've looked at recommend (not require) a shut-off valve before and after the canister. I've also seen a couple diagrams showing shut-off valves before and after the expansion tank, giving me 4-5 shut-off locations, which feels excessive, especially in such a small area, but I wanna make sure it's done properly.

So my question is, in the following run, how many shut-off valves (aside from the main SO) should I install and where:

Main line (from slab) > Main SO > PRV > Sediment Filter > Expansion Tank > Hybrid Water Heater

Thanks in advance!

To your list, add the tee for the cold. Add the tee for the outside spigots.

Main line (from slab) > Main SO > tee outside alt1 > PRV > tee outside alt2 > Sediment Filter > cold tees off >hot supply valve > Expansion Tank > Hybrid Water Heater

Around the sediment filter, if that is a cartridge filter, consider a 3-valve bypass. That way if the filter housing fails, you still have water.

Plan for softener?

Hey, wait a minute.
