So we went to Walmart and purchased a new shower head for our shower, and when we got home we realized that there wasn’t even a shower arm installed in the wall, they just screwed this shower head and secured it with a wire in place. How can we install a new shower arm so we can take a shower ? Does water come through the shower arm as well ? Looks like they have the water coming from the faucet rather than a pipe from behind the shower wall (which I assume is the shower arm, but there isn’t a lot of information out about this). Thank you in advance for any advice. Pictures attached (and yes we’re going to recaulk as well)

Do you have access to the other side of the wall?

Normally, a 1/2 inch drop ear elbow would be at the top, secured by a 2x4 or some other wood blocking. The shower arm would screw into that and water would flow through it to the shower head.

But that would be a different style of shower valve that fed the water line up, behind the wall.

Something like this:

You see in step 3 the drop ear elbow.

With what you have, unless you are doing a renovation where you are breaking up the wall and changing the shower valve, I think your best bet would be to just find some holder for your shower head you have. Something like this:

If you unscrew the white shower head does water come out?

You don't have a shower you have a tub. Get a magnetic handheld or screw up slide bar.
