I have to decided to add a water softener to our home. There are only 2 adults and are monthly usage is between 2000 - 3000 gallons monthly except in the summer when jumps to 10,000+ when irrigation is running. We have 3 baths but only the master with a shower is used much. We are on municipal water that at 185-189 milligrams/thousand. I verified this and there goal is to not be over 185 so it’s always going to be very hard. Our home has 3/4” water supply to the irrigation than throttled down to 1/2” after that.
What size and model do you suggest I get? I plan to buy it online and have a buddy who was a plumber help me install it.

The problem is that most online resellers are only looking at the price, not the quality. The need for these guys to be one dollar cheaper than the next guy has led to a glut of garbage components, medias, tanks etc being used. We have seen many counterfeit valves, tanks and even medias on the market.

You will need to bypass the irrigation. Is that possible?

It will be very easy to put in the softener after the irrigation system. Would I need to install a back flow preventer between the irrigation and the softener?

Normally you would have a reduced pressure back flow preventer or a vacuum breaker if you can mount it above for the irrigation.
