My husband has been trying to install a new tank and pump for our well. He is dead set on doing this himself. I'm going to try and put the video with this post but we have been through 1 brand new tank and 5 pumps. Granted 2 of the used pumps were no good when we got them but this last one was a great pump. For several days now it has been kicking on and off all day and night. We know that is not good and I don't give this poor pump a week before it burns up. This pump blew the end of our fitting he had on the pressure tank off. Does that mean the tank is bad now?

Definitely need more info. Well depth, static water level, pump depth, pump size/model, well production gpm, pressure tank info, etc...

I presume this is an above ground pump.

1. Does the pump have a single pipe connecting to the well?
2. Is the well a 2.5 inch OD steel pipe driven into the ground, or something else?
3. Will the pump run repeatedly even though there is no water usage? Cut off the valve that keeps water from going to the house to make sure no water is being used.
4. Is the pressure gauge good, and what pressures does it indicate?

5. Where is the check valve? Those are usually bronze or brass or stainless steel or even plastic for wells, and have an arrow cast into the side of the housing showing the direction of flow.

6. You can upload a photo, up to 900 pixels by 900 pixels, but 480x600 is a good size. JPEG (JPG) are usually a good format choice. 200KB max file size. A photo should include the jet pump, pressure switch, and the input to the pressure tank.

7. If you want to use a video, you will have to upload that to a site, such as youtube, and post the link here.

Your husband is over his head. Used pump? Brand new pumps with warranties aren't all that expensive.

If it's cycling at night when no water is being used you've also got a leak.

I can tell from the sound your check valve is not working. Cycling on and off when water is being used because you don't have a Cycle Stop Valve is bad enough for the pump, but cycling on and off when no water is being used because your check valve is bad is even worse for the pump. Get a good check or foot valve, then add a Cycle Stop Valve to stop cycling while you are using water.
