Manual backwash "Salt Extender" protocol. Any downside?

At 12 pounds of salt per regen, if you regen every 14 days, you will use 7.2 40-lb bags per year. If you regen every 28 days, you use 3.6 bags per year.

Yes, 12 is pounds is a lot more than the original subject of the thread.

I guess you could be a big spender and take your wife and
buy her a meal at Mcdonalds or White Castles with your yearly savings.....lol

Thought I'd jump in here with a quick thanks to those like Reach4 and Bannerman who provide so much information here! By contrast, there are other online forums for various trades where members are a bit hostile toward DIY homeowners.

I appreciate the time you put into this guys. Happy New Year!

You are so correct about the hostile forums out there.... I used to hang out at the "Plumbing Zone" but they have
become so nasty to everyone that would simply asks a question I could not handle it any more.....

Some of the moderators are so full of themselves that they
even went after some new guys who have just started out in business that were inquiring about leasing
a masters lisc from someone in their area to run their business through...........
These clowns tried to get this guy in trouble with their local plumbing boards....

I had enough of their inflated egos and got myself banned

Besides, engineers delight in optimizing systems. (I'm not a Greenie. But I see no reason to dump more salt into the earth than necessary.)
Ahhhhhhh...........this explains a lot! I tend to have an engineering mentality, but attribute most of my my issues to OCD, lol.

This site was a huge assistance when I DIY/weekend warriored/self-engineered the water softener in my home in 2017. I did a spreadsheet comparing the salt AND water use of numerous different configurations, but way short of ergonomicmike's tweaking.

I appreciate Master Plumber Mark's frankness and believe he may have called me out a time or two. It often brings the discussion down a notch or two, back to reality. Approaching old age (almost 69), I appreciate the experienced skilled trades people more than ever, and moan less about their exorbitant prices. I know that the licenses, insurance, government regulations, equipment, materials are a huge part of today's situation. It's too bad that getting trades work done today has gone this direction.
