I have a Kinetico Model 50, unknown age, it came with the house 8 years ago. I noticed that it stopped using salt and on investigation I discovered that it wasn't regenerating. When water is running in the house, I believe I should see the 'No Back Pawl' and the "Regen Start Pawl' ticking along the gear thingie, but the gear thingie doesn't move.

I can force it to regenerate by using a phillips screwdriver to advance the position indicator. When that regeneration is underway the position indicator does move from one side of the circle to the other side. Also, once that's finished the water in the house is gross and brownish. Unfortunately, information on Kinetico water softeners seems to be a closely guarded state secret. Can anyone suggest the next step to check for me?

(I'm not a professional. Do I know what I'm doing? No. But I can generally figure it out, sometimes with a little help from my friends.)

I have a 22 year old model 50 bought new in 1995. I have been looking for parts diagram, no luck so far. As you state it does seem to be a close guarded secret. If you are handy, I would recommend dissembling and check for foreign junk in your level one gear train. Since it goes through the regeneration cycle your regen gear train seems to be free. Youtube has a lot of good videos to help you in your repair. JUST MAKE SURE YOU TURN THE SCREWS BACKWARD TILL THEY POP when you start to reassemble. Youtube has good video about that as well. Good luck and I will help you the best I can. Mine runs like a Farrari........
