But kenmore is a sears product. Thought they went bankrupt

Check it out.
Sears may be out of business, but they may have sold the kenmore brand just before going bust.
Find out who owns Kenmore now and call them for warranty repairs.
They also sold Craftsman to Lowe's.
Personally, if the water heater is old, almost older than the "warranty period", I doubt anyone out there will give you a replacement WH.
