Hello,

I am currently installing a new shower valve and converting to copper from the shutoff valve below with 1/2" PEX, and I noticed the instructions say not to use PEX from valve to spout to prevent an issue where water can come out the shower head as well as tub spout to due constriction in the line.

Reading up on this, it sounds like a lot of people are able to successfully mitigate this problem by using 3/4" PEX from the valve to the spout. Has anyone else done this with success?

It is less trouble to use 1/2" copper than it is to adapt 3/4 PEX back and forth from 1/2. Considering that the piping is empty except when the fixture is being used, there is really no benefit to using PEX in a tub/shower install.

No. Any restriction to the tub spout can force water out of the shower head. Copper pipe or brass pipe nipples, keeping everything full sized.
