I have a 60’ deep 100 year old 2” galvanized well. I removed the pump jack and pump rods about fifteen years ago and installed a Wayne deep well jet pump. I have never had much water flow. I cannot run a sprinkler. It takes a long time for it to build pressure in the tank. Sometimes in the morning I hear air when I flush the toilet. I’m assuming there is a foot valve in the bottom of the casing. Does it have to be removed for the jet pump?

No foot valve in the casing. Deep well jet pumps should have a ejector at the bottom of the two pipes in the well and a foot valve below that. Picture would help.

I did install a foot valve at the bottom of the ejector. My pump uses one pipe and the 2” casing as the second pipe. My question is since I had pump rods initially is there a foot valve at the bottom of the 2” well casing that needs to be removed?

That is called a packer system when using the casing as the drive pipe on a jet pump. I would think the bottom check for the rod pump would have been on the bottom of the pump barrel. Otherwise it would be screwed to the bottom of the 2" casing and be impossible to retrieve.

How deep is the drop pipe? Less than 25' you don't need a packer. I am worried that the casing is not smooth enough to seal the leathers on the packer, which could be causing the low flow problem.

I don’t remember how deep the drop pipe is. But it’s definitely more than 25’ I did have a brass check valve with the leather on the pump rod. Would it be worth while to pull the pump and put something in the well to try to clean a screen at the bottom of the casing if one exists?
