What to do when tools just won't fit?

    It really wasn't in the way, I had a good inch or so ahead of the ring to work with. It's just hard to see based on the picture.

    That's essentially what I ended up doing, although without the chisel. I split the nut and could unscrew it with repeated hammer blows on a screwdriver shoved into the slot.

    When you connect the new drain, you need a brass "trap adapter" screwed on to the pipe and the trap slid through it and the slip nut tightened on the trap arm.
