Hello, we have a well and were thinking about getting a water softener but wondering if we can get by without one. Our plumber is recommending trying filtration first. Our hardness has was tested at 3.3-4 gpg (2 different sources, 1 after adding a scale blaster which wraps around incoming pipe) and we have 0 iron. We do have orange sludge in our toilet tanks and water heater and damage to our sinks around the drain and toilets which are all fairly new (due to hardness?). We definitely need a sediment filter or 2. We were looking at the rusco but not sure about micron size for this type of sediment. Any thoughts? Anything that might help with what we’re seeing other than a water softener since our water is only slightly hard? Attaching some photos. Thanks!

I would likely start with a backwash filter, specific media to your water issues. Have you done a test?
Then add a softener if needed (or anyways, later when you can)
This is my toilet on Well water, what its should look like haha. It hasn't been drained in over 3 years. Well > 1100gal tank > Pump > 50mic screen > do a cartridge filter 10x4.5" > Softener. Im planing on adding a backwashing filter in front of the softener here soon to replace to cartridge filter setup.
Then add a softener if needed (or anyways, later when you can)
