Ontario municipalities are required to regularly test, especially following the Walkerton incident. Most post test reports on-line but if your can't locate, contact your water provider for a printout.
Hardness is typically not stated in municipal reports as that is not considered a safety matter. Hardness should be tested at your specific location as the hardness levels can vary throughout the distribution system particularly if the municipality has multiple water sources. If you plan to service and maintain your own softener, then obtaining a Hach 5b Hardness test kit is highly recommended if not imperative.
