For anyone interested: the gap was the perfect size for flexible backer rod. We inserted that and it blocked the opening perfectly. I used a silicone clear caulk in the corners, but not along the line of tiles. I believe this has solved the issue. It was easy and you can't see the fix.
We live in a 2-year old home and every late summer, when water is scarce (Texas), we get a line of black ants coming in from the top of the shower (on outside wall). I realized today that the top of the tiles are open. The gap inbetween the wall and tile is apprx. 1/4 of an inch. Obviously not caulked, which I will remedy today.
Question: Do I need a small backer rod first, then caulk?
