Here’s a question I can’t seem to find an answer to. About a year ago, we had a 20’ section of cast iron (main line) lined with an epoxy liner because I didn’t want to jack out and replace full line.

Now the missus is thinking about adding a powder room that’s drain would tie in about midway down the lined section.

I’ve heard once you line a pipe you shouldn’t (can’t?) disturb it to make modifications, but is that true or is the risk just voiding the warranty?

It seems like if you were to excavate the small section and cut through the cast iron with a carbide blade, it would also cut cleanly through the liner and then you would just add a banded coupling on each side to tie in the new drain.

What am I missing?

Normally once someone disturbs something under a warrantee all bets are off.

I had a lawsuit where a roofer was being suit for a leak that resulted in a lot of damage below.

I told the clients lawyer he had nothing to worry about because as the roof had a 30-year warrantee, but the roof was for "weather protection" NOT a Promenade roof as there was dog poop on the roof suggesting someone had walked on the roof there by nullifying the warrantee

I would suggest you contact the relining people and ask if they would make the connection without any void to your system.

Yeah, I definitely need to review what the warranty covers. I can count on one hand the number of times a warranty has actually worked out without being prorated down to basically nothing or having some loophole for the warranty provider to not have to cover something.

So from that standpoint, I’m more curious as to if tying in would have some sort of negative functional effect on the liner either upstream or downstream.
