I have an old house with wiring that is not easily identifiable. I'm trying to wire a 3-way smart switch (TP-Link KS230) but I'm confused on which wires should go where. With my best effort, the switch powers on, but blinks
I've identified the main switch and the line wire. I've also identified the traveler wires to the secondary switch by tying all the wires in the main switch box together then checking the voltage of two of the wires in the secondary switch box.
I've also identified the load wire on the secondary switch.
Here is the main switch. There are four wires - what appears to be two sets of black and white wires. No red traveler. Ground is the box. I've tried tying all three white (neutral?) together, but I believe the switch powers on but indicates a failure.
Here's the secondary switch. I've identified the load wire and what I believe are two travelers as I noted above, but I can't be sure. There is also two white wires tied together in the back of the box that I would think are neutral wires. Notice the wires are so old that some of them don't even have sheathing on them - just some kind of string wrapped around it.
Is it possible there are wires missing that are required to use a smart switch?
