Hi. I just dug up an underground downspout extension as Ive been having some water issues in the basement. I found the elbow to the extension was just placed on the pipe. No glue or any sort of seal.

the pipe is some type of plastic thin-wall with a white exterior and black interior. I am not sure whether its standard PVC material. NDS 4” sewer and drain fittings are the right dimension to fit on the pipe. Will standard PVC cement work on this pipe and if not, whats the right sealing method?

The pipe is not replacable without major digging

Thanks

thanks for responding. Its different than I see at my local box stores. Those carry various grades of PVC which is always a single color (white or green) or a HDPE triple wall which has a similar white exterior/black interior but has a corrugated construction which is different. I read you can’t use a typical solvent cement on hdpe which is why I posted.

I hadn’t thought about Fernco as I didn’t think those were rated to be buried outside. I see that they are so thats a potential solution if I can’t find the right sealant.

The black inside is definitely not dirt. Its a layer of the pipe. Thats black interior layer is the reason I am asking the question

I hadn’t thought about Fernco as I didn’t think those were rated to be buried outside.
The 4" long Ferncos (shielded or unshielded) are only for use buried, outside or under a house. Above ground you'd use a 2" long Fernco Proflex or Misson Rubber BandSeal, which are shielded.

As for your pipe, if the white outer layer is PVC, you can solvent weld a fitting on. You could try applying some PVC primer to the white outside, and after giving it 30-60 seconds, use scraping with the point of a knife to compare the area with PVC primer to the area without. If the PVC primer softens it (less of a scrapy sound), it's probably PVC.

Cheers, Wayne

Is it ADS triple wall pipe? https://www.adspipe.com/pipe/triple-wall Home Depot by my house sells it in a perforated French drain product. A little research says no to using PVC glue or any type of solvent weld but there are several HDPE adhesives available that will work. Personally after seeing how well the Goop for plumbing works I wouldn't be afraid to use that, it's an adhesive product as well.

edit: I see you already looked at the triple wall pipe. If you know yours is HDPE you have several glue options. I know I've seen that stuff with a smooth black inner layer and I thought it was HD.
