I'm doing a bathroom remodel and had to take off the water shutoff valves to place plybead panels on the wall. When I removed them they pretty much broke at the threads due to rust. Now I'm left with these ends, the lady at lowes suggested I use a compression coupling which will work for the cold water side because it's deeper in the wall but the hot water side I don't have the space for it.

Do you think I can unscrew and replace the nipple at the 90*? I'm worried the same thing will happen (pipe break due to rust) and then I'm stuck in a worse position. Any help would be appreciated.

Where the steel nipple meets the brass, that's where the biggest problem is.
Replace the nipples and the shutoffs.
You can't use a compression there.

To try to replace the nipple, consider an internal pipe wrench. However it would be better to repipe as much as practical.

What is going on in this picture? It looks like you are going up hill out of your sink drain.

I was able to replace both nipples, thanks for the advice to try it. That is a tee with the drain pipe down and vent up and out.
