I have never liked the single lever flow/temp shower control. In Phoenix, it is downright annoying. When I have the temperature adjust properly, the water flow is not much more than a trickle. It will improve when the water temp of the water supply drops a bit.

Can I replace the single valve with a Mixit (or similar) valve to control flow and temp separately"?

What brand faucet? Well or city water? Have you tried replacing the existing cartridge? How old is it? It's probably the anti scolding cartridge is all gummed up.

For A two handle unit you will need to replace the valve body and trim kit. If you can open the wall behind it it's doable. From the front there are wide trim kits to open the tile side.
This is a sample, mind you all tub/shower faucets must have an anti scolding cartridge.

Do you know what a Mixit Valve is??? It is a single valve that incorporates a separate control for temp and for flow. But it is a single valve. I am asking if I can take the [generic] existing single level valve and replace it with a [single] Mixit valve.
