I have an old American Standard faucet that is dripping when turned on. The diverter spout drips when the handle is off.

It looks like the one posted in this thread.

From what I have read, I either need to repair the valve with a repair kit (https://www.homedepot.com/p/DANCO-R...tandard-Tub-and-Shower-Faucet-80713/202070992) or replace the valve.

So what is the best option? Do I need a new cam and shaft if I repair? Any recommendations on where to get? If I replace, is it something best left to a professional and not a novice like me? What would I be looking at for the cost if there is access in the wall?

You can try replacing parts, you may get lucky and stop the leak, but chances are you won't.
Replacing the faucet thru the other side of the wall involves various trades: plumbing, drywall repair, painting - it may be too complicated for you as a novice. Hiring professionals will be much more than $14.95 plus tax.
