Hi looking to get a ventless gas fireplace insert installed in our house. Each floor is 400 sq ft. The downstairs where the unit will be is completely opened.

Looking to find out how many BTU we would need.

Thnaks!

First find out if it is allowed. NY State does not permit ventless gas units to be installed. A fireplace should not be used as the primary source for heat but an auxiliary or supplemental source. They are not designed to run all the time especially ventless. They have an oxygen sensor (realy a flame sensor) that when the oxygen level gets to a low level, it suppose to turn off the unit.

I won't trust it one bit. A ventless gas unit you would need to keep a window open and install CO Carbon Monoxide Detectors.

There are direct vent fireplaces that get fresh air and the expel the exhaust right out the rear of the unit. You would only need to cut 8 or 10 inch hole in the exterior wall. Far safer.
