I had a new water heater installed 4 years ago. The outlet was connected using copper directly to galvanized. This joint corroded badly. I went to replace it and stuck my finger inside the outlet coming from the water heater and it is very corroded inside. It is the taller galvanized piece. It is a Lochinvar Energy Saver gas heater.
Couple questions. Can the piece be replace if I take the top off? Can I try drilling out the corrosion? Any other ideas other buying a new water heater?

Thank you in advance

That corrosion inside the pipe is more than likely the minerals in the water. When water is heated drives the the minerals out of the water ends up is the bottom of tank and in the pipes. Hardness should be checked. Water softener may be needed. Heater needs to be flushed and might want to replace the anode rod.
Nipples in top of tank are screwed in and like the anode rod there in very tight. Watch a you tube video. Corroded fitting at floor joist might want to address.

Thanks. I will give it a look.

Are there any water softeners that work that don't require salt?

Good article
I am very skeptical that TAC & NAC Systems protect pipes. That means that I am skeptical of the study they cite. As I understand it, there is no test that can distinguish water that has gone through one of those gadgets from water that had not. I welcome being shown to be wrong in my skepticism.

ASU tried to find a paper or ? On this statement couldn't. Working with chilled for cooling, boilers and condenser water. Treatment companies use chemicals that for the most part do a good job keeping piping bundles in a chiller clean. The fringe treatment companies come up with voodoo treatments. Here's a pic of a magnet. They would use two across from each other to keep the nasty ions in line. 6 months later was back acidizing the condenser bundle. The electric with UV didn' fair any better. Watts is selling TAC treatment.

Arizona State University studied salt-free water softener alternatives and found that TAC reduced scale formation by more than 90 percent without chemicals or adverse environmental effects. Electronic and magnetic water conditioning systems reduced scale by less than 50 percent.
