Greetings All,

I have a Fleck 5810 SXT valve on my Katalox Lght tank. It developed the dreaded 5810 drain leak a year ago. I replaced the Fleck 61924 Cartridge Seals and Spacers, reused the old yellow piston and smeared a lot of Molykote No 7 grease in the bore, piston and spacer. The leak stopped. Prior to this, this valve used to roar when backwashing. Now it is very quiet. The drain vent is still loud but the valve is generally quiet with 40-50psi during backwash. Is this normal or did I over lube everything? The system seems to work fine.

Also, with the entire system being 7 years old, when should I have the softener resin rebedded, and the KL neutralizer media changed? When should I rebuild the valves with new pistons and seal and spacers?

As all three valves are 5810s, should I consider new systems vs. rebedding & media replacement and rebuild? I can rebuild the valves but not sure I can rebed or media change the tanks.

I have Grunfos 15SQE15-290, Softener (Fleck 5810 SXT 1.5 cu ft. 10x54), Katalox Light (Fleck 5810 2.0 cu ft. 12x52), Neutralizer (Fleck 5810 1.5 cu ft. 10x54)

Thanks in advance….

I certainly understand the thought to slather up the seals and piston with release compound while you are in there. I think they say to only use a light coat. I don't see how a heavy coat would have a big effect on sound.

Can you check bed expansion during backwash, by shining a light thru the unpainted tank? I think KL is often set up with less backwash than ideal.

Changing media is some work. When I changed my iron+H2S media out after about 7 years, the hard part was emptying the old media in the basement.

What is a drain vent? Is this an AIO (Air Injection Oxidizing) system?

On a well, resin can last a very long time. If there is iron leakage thru the KL, and there probably is, you should clean the resin periodically. I like Iron Out powder. Some layer that into the salt. But there is a fairly easy way to do a batch treatment.

The KL tank is black so can't check expansion.

I have a vent/pipe on the 1" drain pipe from the water treatment system to prevent act as an air gap. Actually it is a fitting connected to a pipe on the elbow of the drain where it connects to the house's main drain. It was the only place to create an air gap of sorts.

I have been successfully using the KL without the air tank and micronizer since the system was installed 7 years ago.
