I'm installing a new gas cooktop into a cabinet over a drawer, and my vertical clearance is a little tight. The gas inlet on the appliance is a male 1/2" threaded connection, which is supposed to be connected to the pressure regulator. I can make things fit without modifying the drawer if I install an elbow between the appliance and the pressure regulator.

The pressure regulator is die cast, and the appliance connection looks to be stainless steel. Do I need to be concerned about what kind of metal to use for the elbow? Can I use a black pipe elbow?

Other options would be to install the regulator directly to the shutoff valve. If I do that, do I need to adapt the 1/2" OD Flare from the valve to the 1/2" FIP on the regulator? Or are these already compatible thread types?

Thanks,

Starting from the cooktop use a black elbow, a black nipple, the regulator, a flare X MIP adapter then a flex to the gas valve. Be sure to install the regulator in the correct orientation, it will be marked showing the direction of flow.
